The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) specialist’s primary concern is the improvement of learning opportunities for students attending the Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation Champion’s Club After School Program. The STEM Specialist is an on-site instructional facilitator who works under the supervision of the Site Director and Educational Specialist to deliver age-appropriate, hands-on scientific curricula and thematic projects related to STEM disciplines.

Core responsibilities:

Facilitate hands on, curriculum based instruction to small groups of students

 Work closely with Site Director and Educational Specialist to ensure thematic projects support school day STEM instruction and align to Common Core Standards

 Assess the effectiveness and success of the curriculum and recommend changes based on student performance to the Site Director and Education Specialist

 Coordinate the administration and implementation of STEM projects, culminating events and educational trips

 Oversee creation and collection of student work (i.e. student portfolios, presentations, project boards)

 Participate and co-facilitate STEM trainings at site and SASF main office

 Plans lessons, projects and units for use in the after school program and ensure the successful execution and implementation of these plans.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Broad knowledge of Science Technology, Engineering and Math disciplines and instructional strategies

 Understanding and experience of education in an urban setting

 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families and school partners including school administration and staff

 Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills


Required Education and Experience:

DOE Teaching Certification

Bachelors Degree in Education and/or Science; Master’s strongly preferred

 Three years classroom experience in an urban setting

 Proven track record of success in the classroom

 Experience working with children of multiple intelligences and differentiated learning styles
